Author Bae: From Paratrooper to Poet, Guiding You Through Life's Complexities

Hey Elizabeth! Can you share a bit about yourself?

I am Elizabeth Duncan. I am a woman of God. I am a wife, sister, daughter, and friend. I am also a 10-year U.S. Army Veteran and paratrooper. In the military, I became an experienced Master Resiliency Trainer, increasing my love to encourage others and myself. I've been curious about every aspect of life for as long as I can remember. Writing is how I've always explored and reasoned complex equations of the mind and heart. I love learning new information and being creative. I appreciate gaining new understandings, especially the wonders of God. The amazement of everything life…animals, ocean life, etc.

You've been writing since you were 13—awesome! How about, who did you have in mind when writing "Moon Walk," and what's the one big message you want readers to take away?

I wrote Moon Walk for military members and African Americans. Humanity makes us relatable, therefore most readers will feel seen. I would like readers to take away that no matter what happens in life, we must maintain a light mindset in the face of life's darkest challenges. In return, it builds our resilience.

Becoming an author sounds like an incredible journey. How has it rocked your world?

This journey as an author has just begun for me. I have fulfilled the aspiration of my inner little girl. I am amazed and grateful for the drive and wisdom it took to get here. The insight of knowing my purpose at such a young age leaves me lost for words (the irony). Since this was a self-published adventure, I'm proud of myself. Jesus has been so kind to me. I've learned the different capacities of love and support from those I love, people in my life, friends, and strangers. Becoming an author is very revealing in all aspects.

For someone out there dreaming of writing their own book but held back by fear, what nugget of wisdom would you drop on them?

Fear means you are ready. Experiences that have the ability to grow and mature us. Becoming a writer is another feat to conquer. Allow the nerves you feel to propel you forward instead of holding you back. Talk to your doubt and demand its undivided attention. You are an author. You will finish your book. One page a time. All you have to do now is write. 

What's cooking next for you? Any exciting plans or events, and how can your supporters get in the loop?

Now that I have written my first book, I would like to grow my audience and keep the momentum flowing. I will be releasing a newsletter soon on SubStack called the Candid Space. https://elizaduncan.substack.com or elizabethcan.substack.com.

Building an empire sounds intriguing! How do you see yourself expanding from "Moon Walk," and what's the grand vision for your journey as an author?

Exactly, I would like to build as an author by writing and publishing more. My dream is to take up a row on a bookshelf. I'll continue to use my light by building and encouraging others. I'm not sure where that'll take me, but I definitely enjoy it. There's also a need for a space to be honest about what we think, feel, and see, therefore my goal with the Candid Space is to support freeing the soul's voice and welcoming intimate thoughts. I'm thrilled to manifest my future as a writer. It all started with giving my first book, Moon Walk, to the world.
