Author Bae: Literary Sensation Turned Bravo Star

Author Bae: Literary Sensation Turned Bravo Star

Hey Avni! Tell us a bit about yourself—what's your story and how did you find yourself diving into writing and entrepreneurship?

Hi! I'm Avni Parekh, an award-winning author, entrepreneur, and Bravo TV personality. For 20 years, I have specialized in internal and external communications, as well as marketing. Writing has been a childhood passion of mine that carried over into adulthood. Additionally, I love the value that self-improvement books bring to my life, and noticed that I hadn’t come across a book that spoke to specific issues that I was dealing with at the current moment, which inspired me to write "Be The Bigger Person: Scenarios & Solutions to Better Yourself." I wanted to give people an all-encompassing tool that would help them cope with their problems and maintain self-control and peace of mind amid negativity. To add to that, I released three companion books to "Be The Bigger Person" this year — "Don't Give In" self-development workbook, "I'm Above It" coloring book, and "My Life Journal."

"Be The Bigger Person" sounds intriguing! Can you sum it up in three words that capture the essence of your book?

The three words that describe my books are: a) Game-changer, b) Transformational, and c) Authentic.

Who did you have in mind when you were writing "Be The Bigger Person," and what's the key message you hope every reader takes away from it?

"Be The Bigger Person" and its companion workbook "Don't Give In" were written for individuals who fall into Generation Y & Generation Z. They are specifically geared toward men and women born between 1985 and 2005, from all faiths, all ethnicities and people at all phases of life. The central message in my four books is developing self control and not allowing negativity to affect your life in ways that take away your happiness. And, the most important takeaway I’m sharing is rising above negativity in your life by taking the high road, instead of allowing your emotions to get the best of you. The value my books bring to a reader’s life is solidifying the need for self control when conflicting situations arise, bringing to light the red flags often overlooked in a person’s personal and private lives, and reinforcing ideas they may already believe in order to overcome hardships.

Becoming an author is a big deal! How has it changed your day-to-day life and perspective? Any unexpected impacts?

When I published "Be The Bigger Person" in 2018, after having written it in 30 days back in 2014, I can truly say that I accomplished one of my life goals. Achieving a goal that I had set for myself very early in life was a testament that I can achieve anything I put my mind to, despite the obstacles that pop up along the way. Being an author is more than just a title, it comes with a heavy responsibility to uphold the words you're sharing with the world. Overall, it has left a very positive impact on my life being able to help readers through my books.

Stepping into the world of writing must have nudged you out of your comfort zone. Can you share some moments where you felt stretched, and what advice do you have for others who are feeling a bit stuck?

I possess an innate desire for solitude, and find peace in the quiet confines of my home, where words flow freely on paper. However, becoming an author propelled me into a whirlwind of events, forcing me to confront my introverted tendencies and embrace the world beyond my doorstep. Book signings, author panels, and art festivals became my new stomping grounds, with each event presenting a unique opportunity to connect with readers, fellow authors, and industry professionals. I've gained invaluable insights, discovered new perspectives on storytelling, and met incredible people who share my passion for making this world a better place. Therefore, for those who feel stuck, I offer the following advice — embrace the unknown! Step out of your comfort zone because it's in those moments of uncertainty that personal growth occurs.

Perfect! Now, I know marketing is crucial for any author. What are some practical tips you'd give to fellow writers looking to get their work out there and connect with their audience?

As an author, marketing your work is essential to reaching a wider audience and achieving success. When it comes to effective marketing tips there are so many I can think of, however, the top three marketing strategies that have worked for me are;

1) Build an author platform: Create a strong online presence by establishing an author website or blog. Share your writing, engage with readers, and showcase your expertise in your genre.

2) Utilize email marketing: Build an email list and send newsletters to keep readers informed about your work, upcoming releases, and exclusive offers. Offer incentives for subscribing, such as free content or early access to new releases.

3) Attend author events: Participate in book signings, author panels, and literary festivals to connect with readers, network with industry professionals, and promote your work.

Remember, marketing is an ongoing process, and it takes time and effort to build a successful author brand. Stay consistent, experiment with different strategies, and analyze your results to continuously improve your marketing efforts.

Your journey involves not just writing but also creating a range of companion books. How have you used your writing skills to open up new opportunities for yourself?

Writing is an art form just like painting and drawing. When you have a talent, I believe you must use it. So, I catapulted my gift of writing by turning it into a business. I run a boutique brand development agency and utilize my skill set which includes two decades of communications and digital marketing experience to partner with large corporations and small businesses in the health and wellness sector. To add to that, I help fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands secure press and media.

Facing the fear of putting your thoughts out there can be daunting. What advice would you give to someone who wants to write a book but has allowed fear to hold them back?

Truth is, fear is debilitating. It can stop a person in their tracks and inhibit them from moving forward with pursuing life goals. On that account, when it comes to writing a book, the best advice I can give is to start. Just start writing and don't stop until you have your manuscript. From there, everything else follows.

What projects do you have in the pipeline?

At the moment, I have several projects in the works. For instance, I'm writing a few other books simultaneously, and will be launching a podcast entitled, Be The Bigger Person. Plus, I'm the founder of an athleisure clothing line, inspired by my books, aptly named Be The Bigger Person and have a couple of collections I am designing and preparing to launch next year, including a resortwear collection which I've been working on for over a year. Frankly speaking, I'm always juggling several projects at the same time, and I wouldn't have it any other way!
