Author Bae: From Pagentry to Purpose Driven Author
Share
Heather, you've had quite the journey through various roles. Can you tell us more about your diverse background and what drives you?
Absolutely! My life revolves around faith, family, and a passion for healing and empowerment. I've worn many hats, from being a pageant queen to a professional counselor. My faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation of it all, inspiring me to help others find purpose in their pain.
Your journey into writing is fascinating. How long have you been writing, and what inspired you to publish "Where’s My Hair? A Trichotillomania Story for Children"?
Writing has been a part of my life since childhood. I was even a competitive writer in school. In 2018, I penned "Where’s My Hair? A Trichotillomania Story for Children" when I couldn't find a children's book on the subject. It was a response to a young client I had with the disorder, and it ended up being the first book on the market specifically designed for children.
That's quite the accomplishment. Who did you have in mind when you wrote this book, and what's the key message you want all readers to take away?
While the book was initially for children, it has resonated with adults, therapists, doctors, hair salons, and teachers. My goal was to educate children about Trichotillomania, letting them know they're not alone in their struggles.
Becoming an author is a profound journey. How has this new role impacted your life personally?
It's been an emotional journey, particularly given the personal nature of this book. I've received heartfelt messages from people who shared their stories and thanked me for writing it.
They often expressed a wish for such a resource when they were younger. Becoming an author has given purpose to my own pain.
That's incredibly powerful. Can you describe the emotions you felt when you made your first sale?
My first sale was remarkable. It wasn't just one copy; it was 400 copies to Hair Club. I was overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude. Hair Club has been an incredible supporter of both me and the book, making it part of their Hair Club for Kids program and placing copies in all their salons.
Overcoming fears is often a part of the journey. How have you silenced your fears and moved forward boldly as an author?
Fear is a natural part of venturing into something new, especially when it's deeply personal. What keeps me going is the belief that we all have stories and struggles. If one person is dealing with something, someone else out there is too. The thought of helping even one person not feel alone in their struggle fuels my writing.
Powerful advice! What would you say to those who dream of writing a book but are held back by fear?
Just do it! As Nike wisely says, "Just do it!" We all have a unique purpose, and writing might be the path to discovering it.
